Why I won’t set foot in Trump’s America – even for the World Cup |
Do events in America outweigh the desire of fans to watch Scotland play? Writer at Large Neil Mackay says he won’t go to the USA as long as Donald Trump is in power.
This year I had two big trips planned to America. The first was scheduled for March. I wanted to go, with my wife, and see my American relatives. It was going to be quite the shindig. We called it off.
The second was planned for September, when my wife and I celebrated a major wedding anniversary. I have worked a lot in America, but my wife has never been and she really wanted to travel from New York to San Francisco. Again, we called it off.
Both the family trip and the anniversary were impossible for us if we were to stay true to our conscience. I refuse to return to America as long as it is under the heel of Donald Trump.
My wife, who is not very political whereas I am, was even more adamant than me, however. She sees Trump as morally repugnant, particularly regarding women, and has no wish to - in her words - ‘prop up the shit he’s doing’.

I like America, and I will miss not travelling to the States. But I cannot go. I would feel as if I’d betrayed everything I value and stand for, if I travelled there whilst Trump is in power.
There are some - maybe many - who disagree with me. But I would not have holidayed in Germany in 1935. So I will not holiday in Trump’s America in 2025.
History will be the judge of whether I am too overblown in my reaction to what’s happening in........
