Most of the Yes movement has long dismissed claims that the SNP isn’t interested in independence. The party’s loyal defenders have steadfastly maintained that such a notion, which has flourished on the fringes, was as absurd as claiming that Labour hated the working-class.

Well, you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who still considers Labour pro-worker. Likewise, many moderate Yes voters now find themselves struggling to defend the SNP when it comes to independence.

Events this week have given much substance to speculation. There’s now real anger bubbling among both moderates in the wider Yes movement and rank-and-file SNP members.

The SNP base is up in arms, frankly, accusing the leadership of “shutting down debate” after it emerged that multiple draft resolutions on independence hadn’t made it onto the party’s provisional conference agenda.

It seems that a number of party branches put forward resolutions suggesting new strategies for independence. Yet none made the cut.

Motions referencing independence which did make the cut have angered the base even more. One calls for a commission to renew the independence prospectus.
