As 2025 fades away and 2026 beckons what can we hope for in the year ahead. There are some obvious big things. Democratic countries hold their nerve in support of Ukraine, Russia's economy collapses, Putin is booted out of office, somebody sensible takes over and withdraws Russian forces from Ukraine. A very big one but worth hoping for.

The Scottish electorate recognise that after 19 years of incompetent government the SNP should be removed from office at Holyrood. Should happen, fingers crossed, definitely on the wish list.

Scotland wins the football World Cup. Yes, definitely worth praying for. In fact we all just know it will happen, what can possibly go wrong? Brazil must be worried.

What about smaller things? One I hope for most days is the elimination of drivel, mainly but not exclusively originating in America, from the language we use and instead saying what we actually mean.
