As a new mum, my Scottish island does what it always does: It shows up for us
They say it’s the little things that mean the most. And as I sit here, cup of tea in hand and wearing a dressing gown I’d forgotten I owned, cradling my newborn in the stillness of the morning, I get it.
We find ourselves celebrating every victory now, no matter how small. We cheer when Cailean burps, we whisper shout when we complete a successful transfer from our arms to his cot, and every coo he makes is met with a coo from ourselves. These tiny milestones have become our new markers of time. Life with a newborn here on the Isle of Rum has taught us that time is just a concept - days and nights blur together and mid-afternoon takes us by surprise every day.
It’s changed the way we measure progress, too. Before our baby, I could point to spreadsheets, work to-do lists, and a timely dinner on the table. Now? It’s all about the little wins.
One of my proudest was my first solo walk to the shop. A journey of what, five minutes? Seven if I’m feeling dramatic? But with Coinneach back at work and my c-section scar still giving me a bit of bother,........
