The Gaza war followed naturally from the murderous pogrom perpetrated by Hamas. Shock, short-sightedness and a sense of helplessness united almost the entire public in support of the inevitable war. The saga of the hostages added greatly to the feeling of humiliation. Israel is now fighting to regain its deterrence and to eliminate the possibility of Hamas returning to control of the Gaza Strip.
