Jerusalem Affairs and Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu, the son of Rabbi Shmuel (“It’s forbidden to rent apartments to Arabs”) Eliyahu, wrote last week on his Twitter account that the proposed National Guard should operate only against Israeli citizens who identify with the enemy.

First of all, thanks for clearing up any possible confusion about its goal. Because postponement of the judicial overhaul legislation last month had been conditioned by National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir on the establishment of a National Guard, many opponents of the overhaul had mistakenly thought that the National Guard was going to target them.

It’s good that they were mistaken. We’ve learned that law and order is being maintained in the way it has always been, that the good guys and the bad guys remain the same. Although Jews are also beginning to discover that their “democratic country” is a bluff and that the state is still based on race.

Eliyahu explained himself by saying that in his opinion, “The division of powers must be such that the police will handle ordinary crime and issues of law and order among rank and file citizens, whereas the National Guard will handle nationalist crime.” He explained, “In that way we won’t get to situations in which we see a police commissioner accusing the Jewish public of rioting.” The problem is accusing the Jews of rioting, not the rioting itself, right?

In other words, the minister is in effect saying that the Jews are the only genuine citizens, the Arabs are subjects, people who identify with the enemy, who for the time being are considered citizens (and in any case don’t have equal rights, so citizenship is on paper only) but not for much longer. So what, will Jews, citizens, run wild? What, are they Arabs? At most Jews protest, demonstrate, shout the honest truth. “Riots.” That’s something for Arabs.

And what, actually, is a “nationalist crime,” and how does it differ from “ordinary crime”? Is the heroin sold by a Jewish drug dealer less dangerous than that of an Arab drug dealer? Does a Jewish bank robber want only to steal money while an Arab bank robber has other motives? And what if there’s a mixed gang of thieves, how do we decide on the motive?

Tax evasion by an Arab, is that nationalistic? Illegal construction? Reckless driving? Protection money and arms dealing? Is that under the authority of the National Guard or the regular police? And what about crimes by Arab citizens committed against other Arabs? True, there’s no budget for that – 42 murdered since the beginning of the year, an all-time record.

Ben-Gvir and Eliyahu want a Jewish militia with legal powers that operates only against Arabs. The next stage could well be to decide that every criminal case that reaches the courts via the National Guard will require a punishment double that of a case that originates with the regular police. Or perhaps it will require less evidence to win a conviction.

They won’t even have to work hard. It will be enough for a judge to see that the detainee is being led into court by officers wearing different uniforms (brown shirts would be appropriate) and the sentence can be handed down without the bother of hearing testimony. A separate legal system based on origin and race, where have I heard that before?

In a potentially related development, this week it was reported that Tel Aviv and Berlin are on the way to becoming sister cities. I wonder whether in that context we will be sending police officers to Germany for professional training.
