Antisemitism Is Good for Both Palestinians and Israelis. It’s Still Wrong

I’ve been accused in the past of being an antisemitism-denier because in this column I wrote a number of times that the ancient hatred of Jews is no longer an existential threat to our people and today most antisemites are cranks and crusties that no one takes seriously. But it seems that the real reason that I haven’t been taking antisemitism seriously is because it poses a threat to a whole other group – one that I didn’t take into account – and that it should not be measured merely by the danger that it poses to its intended targets.

Something very strange has happened in the wake of the latest round of warfare in the Gaza Strip. Suddenly, people on the progressive left have woken up to the “true” danger of antisemitism. Over the past few days, they have felt an urgent need to explain that open hatred and harassment of Jews is a bad thing. And if that isn’t strange enough, they’ve actually come up with a brand-new, totally original reason that antisemitism is bad.

Antisemitism in 2021 isn’t bad because it targets a historically persecuted minority and has been used throughout history to justify the forced conversions of Jews to Christianity and Islam, the closure of Jews in ghettos (yes, that word originally meant a closed-off quarter where Jews were forced to live), their discrimination, vilification, persecution and ultimately industrial genocide.
