Heart Warns Before It Fails

A heart keeps beating every moment, whether we think about it or not. We study, work, travel, eat, sleep and remain busy with our daily lives, while the heart quietly does its work. We usually remember it only when something goes wrong. But perhaps the bigger problem is not that the heart fails to warn us. Perhaps we have become too busy to listen.

Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death worldwide. The World Health Organization reports that they account for an estimated 19.8 million deaths annually, and 85 percent of those deaths can be attributed to heart attacks and strokes. These numbers are large, but behind every number is a person, a family and a life changed forever.

The danger is that heart disease does not always announce itself loudly. High blood pressure, high blood sugar and high cholesterol can exist for years without obvious symptoms. A person may also experience unusual breathlessness, unexplained tiredness, dizziness, swelling or discomfort and simply blame it on stress, age, lack of sleep or a busy routine. Such symptoms can have many causes, but persistent or unusual changes should not simply be ignored.
