Men, mental health, and the cost of silence

Mental health is a silent but significant part of overall health, especially among men, who often hesitate to talk about stress, anxiety, or emotional exhaustion. In Kashmir, everyday pressures related to work, finances, family responsibilities, and health have had a visible impact on mental well-being. Studies suggest that around 40–45 per cent of adults in the Valley experience symptoms of mental distress, with over one-third showing signs of depression and nearly one-quarter experiencing anxiety. Despite this, a large number of men do not seek help due to stigma, lack of awareness, or the belief that emotional distress should be handled alone. As a result, many continue to suffer quietly, affecting not just their own health but also their families and productivity.
