NC House Divided, Exposes Ideological Dilemma |
The National Conference (NC) today presents a striking political paradox. Despite its substantial strength in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly and its position at the head of the elected government, some of its most consequential political challenges are emerging from within its own ranks. The widening confrontation between Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Srinagar MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, the controversy surrounding MLA Bashir Ahmad Veeri, and differences among legislators over Article 370, Article 35A and autonomy have brought the party’s political direction under renewed scrutiny.
From the BJP’s perspective, these developments raise a fundamental question: has the National Conference reconciled the promises on which it sought power with the compromises and priorities of governance? What was once discussed as internal disagreement has increasingly become a matter of public confrontation. The most visible example is the widening gulf between Omar Abdullah and Ruhullah Mehdi. Their differences go beyond an occasional disagreement between two senior party figures. Ruhullah has repeatedly questioned the political course adopted by his own party after it formed the government. By September 2026, the confrontation had intensified to the point where he threatened to leave the National Conference, while senior party leaders publicly criticised his position.
An NC legislator also alleged that the controversy was linked to an external attempt to divide the party. That remains an allegation by the legislator, not an independently established fact. For the BJP, the significance of the Ruhullah episode lies less in the personalities involved and more in the issues at stake. Article 370, constitutional guarantees, restoration of statehood, reservation and accountability for electoral commitments have all figured in the wider debate over the NC’s political direction.
When a parliamentarian elected on the ruling party’s ticket repeatedly questions whether the government is remaining faithful to its commitments, the controversy becomes difficult to dismiss as a routine disciplinary matter. The question is no longer simply whether Ruhullah agrees with Omar Abdullah. It is whether the National Conference has a clearly articulated position on the constitutional and political questions that shaped its campaign.
Veeri episode exposes competing pressuresThe controversy involving NC MLA Bashir Ahmad Veeri offered another glimpse into the party’s internal tensions.Veeri sought to introduce legislation concerning reservation and enhancement of the Open Merit quota. His proposal encountered opposition from his own government and the Bill was defeated. The episode reportedly left relations between the legislator and the party leadership strained.Whatever the merits of Veeri’s proposal, the political implications were significant. A ruling-party legislator sought consideration of an issue he regarded as important to his constituents, only to find his own government opposing his legislative initiative.
The episode highlights the competing pressures confronting the NC. Its legislators must respond to the expectations of their constituencies, including........
