HISTORY: Shift to Thursday payday aimed to appease local businesses

I’m cold, ergo my body is cold ergo my brain is cold which means I am having an awful time trying to get in gear and write something mildly amusing for you today – so, here is what I came up with, a look at some of the newsy items in the local 1931 newspapers – hope this fits the bill for you today!

If you have ever looked through the old Porcupine Advance newspapers, you will note that local news figures large (no kidding, Sherlock), and that international news gets the one-to-two sentence treatment, usually accompanied by a grossly unflattering photo of the person being discussed.

Not only are the photos bad, but some of the news items leave you wanting more: “Fight Witchcraft Doctors – District Attorney R.F. Fisher has inaugurated a drive to exile witchcraft practitioners from York County Pennsylvania. They have been held responsible for murders and other less vicious crimes in York County in recent years.”

Excuse me? There were practising witches living and breathing in Pennsylvania in early 1931 who were committing murders and generally running amok? Apparently, the story is attached to incidences of Pennsylvania Dutch folk medicine – no evidence of murders, but definitely some cases of mischief – people will believe anything!

Well, things weren’t quite as exciting as they were in Pennsylvania, but,........
