A true nut should have a solid encasement which, from exposure to natural elements of weather and ground conditions, eventually decays away for the inner seed to be freed.

That process, though, may be disrupted either by the action of animals with strong jaws or humans with forceful tools (handheld stone, decoratively carved figure with levered large mouth, or other mechanical nutcracker) for breaking the shell to access the seed for nourishment.

True nuts include the acorn, chestnut, and hazelnut (aka filbert).

An acorn’s being the seed of the oak tree, shows development from “ak-corn” representing “oak kernel” (the latter term meaning “corn” as “seed-grain”).........
