OpenAI’s Wake Up Call

OpenAI is planning a major shift in its strategy to focus on coding and enterprise users while deprioritizing “side quests,” the Wall Street Journal reported this week. Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of Applications, told employees in an all-hands meeting that the company has tried to do too much all at once. The AI behemoth, best known for its core chatbot ChatGPT, has launched multiple products in the past year like cash burning video generation app Sora (which has reportedly seen usage plummet in early 2026) and a new AI-powered web browser. After acquiring famed Apple designer Jony Ive’s company Io for $6.5 billion, it also teased a hardware device. A social network is also on the roadmap.

But Anthropic’s back-to-back successes with the launch of Claude Code and Cowork products has served as a “wake up call” for OpenAI, Simo told employees. As its rivals catch up, the ChatGPT maker is looking for new ways to increase enterprise adoption. OpenAI is in talks with private equity firms like Bain Capital and TPG to create a joint venture and distribute its enterprise products across their portfolio companies, Reuters reported. Simo confirmed the news on X, adding that over 1 million businesses use its products and its coding tool Codex has grown to more than 2 million users.

One thing that might juice usage: NSFW chats. Despite facing strong pushback from staffers and advisers, OpenAI plans to launch an “adult mode” in ChatGPT that would allow users to have erotic conversations on the app, the Wall Street........
