More details about SpaceX’s highly-anticipated public debut are expected this week, but some experts are already warning that the stock could come with “substantial” risks.

The company is likely to make its paperwork public in the coming days as it prepares to list on the Nasdaq next month, and the IPO will likely mint Elon Musk as the world’s first trillionaire. But trading could be volatile due to the “Elon Musk effect,” explains the University of Florida’s Jay Ritter, as stocks associated with the world’s richest man tend to see far larger swings than the overall market.

“Even if Starlink generates tens of billions of dollars per year in profits [for SpaceX], the money may be squandered on sending people to Mars rather than sending the money to shareholders,” Ritter said.
