IN AMERICA: The vacuum of America

After living in a small town for 60-odd years or so, I’ve gotten a bit of an insight into who is from where, what their family background is like, who their relatives are, what their national heritage is and all that jazz.

And, I know from my time in this town that there are a ton of folks here that have ties to “the old country.”

By the way, the old country can be wherever your grandparents or great-grandparents were from, be it France or Greece, Ireland or Italy.

Like that.

My “old country” happens to be Germany, where my mom and sister live. (If you’re wondering how old a mom is to a guy my age, well, she’s going to be 98 in April.)

So pretty much all of us here in the Finger Lakes in general, and Geneva in particular, have a vested interest in what’s going on “over there” to one degree or another. (Actually, pretty much all of America has........
