There was a delightful live performance of “A Christmas Carol” at the Smith last weekend. I was fortunate to attend with my mom and saw many friends in nearby seats.
I admit that my interest in the Dickens tale borders on obsession. I think the attachment has grown stronger as troubles in the world have grown darker. The core idea of the story is so simple — it is the Golden Rule — but the telling of the tale is so thoughtful, touching on all the reasons why we sometimes abandon that fundamental law of humanity.
Money, greed, selfishness, jealousy, fear — the enemies of community, the enemies of love. Scrooge has those negative traits, and they leave him lonely and cold-hearted. But it doesn’t take a miracle of four ghosts (from Marley through the Ghost of Christmas Future) for us to reflect on our own situations.
