FAITH PERSPECTIVES: High king and lowly shepherd

The readings for today are for the last Sunday after Pentecost — AKA Christ the King Sunday. Following this is the Christmas — AKA Advent. The Old Testament reading is Ezekiel 34:11-16 and the Gospel is Matthew 25:31-46.

I started to think about Jesus as the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, and that is certainly true. Then again both of the Scriptures have to do with The Good Shepherd and His sheep. The Israelites of Jesus’ time we’re looking for a Messiah who would rule and rid the Jewish people of horrible Roman rule. People soon realized that Jesus’ power came from His love of people and making Himself vulnerable. Vulnerable by being born a poor baby to a teenage peasant girl in a stinky stable. What kind of king is that? Jesus’ kingship came with His healing many people and being with the marginalized people of His time. His kingship came in His horrible death........
