BEYOND THE FENCE: Making history, here and now

Time. A fascinating conundrum. Debatably linear. Seemingly positioning past, present and future in a neat little row. But what if the past plays out in the here and now? For it often would appear as though history is being made as we live it, thus causing a subtle wave in that presumed straightaway.

And so it was on a recent day at Deer Haven Park, a wave was set in motion as a step back in time was imminent — a narrow pathway soon to open a glimpse into a secreted past. All the while, history was being made.

As the rising sun graced the eastern sky, it christened a pristine azure with unadulterated light as its energy danced diamondlike across the lakes. Uplifting. Encompassing. The west wind flittered past, a cooling whisper of what once was as it enticed 75 visitors to anticipate DHP’s sold-out, first public tour into the infamous “Q.” Air sparked with keen, palpable enthusiasm hovered as the tour wagons pulled away from the Visitor Center.

The focus would be DHP’s military history regarding the former........
