BEYOND THE FENCE: Exploring new horizons
Visionaries. Those who are at the crux of inventions, happenings, and yet to be explored horizons. It’s hard to imagine where humankind would be without these distinct voices.
Such voices were heard in 1941, when war was raging in Europe. The notion of constructing four nationally spanned, major munitions facilities was determined to be in the country’s best interest. However, it took a visionary to ... well, envision just what that might look like. Enter Leonard Urquhart, professor of structural engineering at Cornell University who is credited with the design of the munition storage magazine, aka, the igloo.
Boasting an ingenuitive design, these storage units would need to provide safe, humidity/temperature-controlled environments to accommodate anything from bullets to 10,000-pound bombs. The thought process that went into igloo development is nothing short of spellbinding. While on tour through Deer Haven Park, the feat of producing over 500 of these monumental structures becomes especially evident when standing in........
