BEYOND THE FENCE: Encapsulating time — Visitors to DHP are asked to 'leave their mark'

Time. An unending linear event — at least in Western culture. Poems have been written about it, songs created, clocks, pendulums, hourglasses, sundials — the list is endless. Such physical nuances inevitably point to the same overarching plot in the cycle of life as we know it. Past. Present. Future.

Many ancient cultures, however, believe in time as a cyclical entity, such as the changing of seasons, and the phases of the moon, for example. Western culture is set on historical markers, and a progression of forward growth, where ancient culture leans more toward nature’s serenity, peaceful existence, and renewal/rebirth.

It is recognized that various attempts have been made to leave one’s mark in time. Deer Haven Park has incorporated this theory as part of this celebratory American history year, but more on that in a bit.

Some have, throughout generations, attempted to encapsulate time. Look up the definition of a time capsule and it will mention things like “deliberate collection ...........
