DENIM SPIRIT: Wake up and smell the roses

It is raining again. Gray and overcast. That weeks-long stretch of blue sky and dandelion sun seems farther away than it should. But, then again, “the sun will come out tomorrow.”

Recently, I had to preach a sermon using a passage from the fourth of the five Books of Moses (Chumash), the Book of Numbers. It was one of those times I marveled at how little our species has evolved in spite of the revolutions in our technologies. Lots of new tools and new weapons, but the same old animal wielding them.

The passage was talking about the Israelites in the wilderness and how, after stumbling around for so long looking for the Promised Land, “ … they had a strong craving.” They just wanted a little taste of meat one more time, and they wept for it. They wept for cucumbers, melons, leeks and onions, oh, and just a........
