DENIM SPIRIT: Running downhill

You probably know this already if you grew up in these parts. But for me, a misplaced Midwesterner, I’m still catching up.

I knew even before we moved here that Seneca Lake was the big one:

38 miles long, 3 miles at its widest point.

78 miles of shoreline, 68 miles of lake surface area.

712 square miles of watershed area.

4.2 trillion gallons of water; and most well-known.

618 feet maximum depth.

I’m sure you know that Seneca Lake is the largest Finger Lake, but do you know about “water retention time?” That’s how long water hangs out in the lake before moving on through the canal toward Seneca Falls. Another way to think about it, for any lake, is how long it takes to completely replace the total volume of water that, at any moment, resides in a lake.

Well, for Seneca it is the same amount of time it takes to raise........
