There seemed to be grudging respect among CBC commentators for the 87-per-cent vote of support Pierre Poilievre got at last week’s Conservative meeting in Calgary, as well as for a decent speech he delivered well. But there was also a consensus that, despite his many well-placed hits against Mark Carney and the Liberals, Poilievre still hasn’t learned how to talk about Donald Trump. As a result, Canadians remain in the dark on how he would handle the U.S. president.

But that’s like saying Poilievre won’t get our votes until he tells us how he would untie the Gordian Knot or square the circle or solve Fermat’s Last Theorem or tell us who killed Cock Robin. The whole world is trying to figure out how to handle the U.S. president. King Charles seems to have found a way. Melania, too. Anyone else you can think of? Keir Starmer mastered it for a while, courtesy of His Majesty’s invitation to Trump to visit, but then came Greenland and now that bromance is off.
