Why Ottawa’s new ‘clean fuel standard’ has us, Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters, worried

The federal government’s draft regulatory framework for its Clean Fuel Standard is leaving every day Canadian consumers at risk of running on “empty” should it be implemented.

The Clean Fuel Standard (CFS) is a proposal for a “lifecycle” measurement of carbon emissions in fuels that could have wide-ranging and uneven impacts on the cost of transporting goods.

At Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME), we spoke up about the potential risks of the CFS throughout this past year and, as the federal government prepares to move forward with the policy in 2019, our concerns are taking on a new urgency.

CME supports the government’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and we enjoy working with all levels of government on solutions that find the right balance between environmental and economic performance. But for Canadian manufacturers, who are completely trade-exposed, programs and regulations must not put us at a disadvantage to our competitors around the........
