Opinion: Vancouver’s port needs to up its grain game
Plans are afoot to increase container capacity, but a terminal that could load grain in the rain may be a bigger priority

The Port of Vancouver is charging ahead with plans to build a man-made island terminal at Roberts Banks, near Delta, B.C. The $3.5-billion project, known as Roberts Bank Terminal 2, would add three new berths, increasing the port’s container capacity by 50 per cent. The port says that once complete the project will contribute $3 billion to Canada’s annual GDP.

Just before Christmas, federal Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon visited B.C. where he affirmed federal funding for the project, noting the urgent need to “double our non-United States exports.”
