The world now throws out more electronic waste than ever before—53.6 million metric tons of it in 2019, the most recent year that stats are available. Part of the problem comes from tech brands, which help fuel a never-ending demand for the latest, shiniest object and are only very slowly moving to make products that are more repairable and recyclable. But one online retailer thinks a different business model can also help: Instead of selling products, the company sells subscriptions to iPhones or laptops or e-bikes.
