Romania’s Far-Right Shift: A Test For European Democracy And Unity – OpEd
The rise of far-right governments in Europe marks a significant shift in political trends with potential long-term consequences for democracy and the European Union (EU). Romania, historically a moderate player within the EU, is facing a possible shift toward far-right governance, raising concerns about its effects on European democratic cohesion and institutional integrity.
This essay argues that this development could weaken democratic norms, exacerbate ideological divisions within the EU, and impede its ability to function as a unified bloc. Drawing on historical parallels, the analysis examines current trends and their implications for European democracy, the rule of law, and EU governance while offering recommendations to address these challenges.
Far-right political movements across Europe have gained strength in recent years, driven by a complex interplay of economic inequality, migration crises, and dissatisfaction with traditional political elites. Romania’s trajectory reflects this broader trend, particularly with the rise of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) as a significant political force. In the 2020 parliamentary elections, AUR secured 9% of the vote, highlighting increasing support for its nationalist, anti-globalist rhetoric. Recent polls indicate further gains in the 2024 elections, with AUR poised to benefit from a fragmented opposition and widespread voter disillusionment. Its agenda, characterized by anti-LGBTQ policies, scepticism toward EU integration, and a focus on Orthodox Christian values, positions it as a potential disruptor both within Romania and the EU.
