Amnesty Report Exposes The State Machinery Behind Iran’s 2022 Crackdown – OpEd

Four years after Iran’s 2022 uprising that followed Mahsa Zhina Amini’s death in custody, Amnesty International’s September 16, 2026 report Architects of Atrocities (1,000 pages; 270 interviews; 2,000 videos and official records) says authorities committed crimes against humanity and names 87 officials for investigation.

Amnesty argues the crackdown was state policy, run through the IRGC, FARAJA, and national-to-local security councils, with orders for a “firm and severe” response and documented killings including 377 named dead (56 children) and 87 killed in Zahedan’s “Bloody Friday.” The piece cites PMOI figures of 750 killed and about 30,000 arrested across 282-plus cities.

The authors say Iran’s system blocks domestic accountability and that the UN Security Council should refer Iran to the ICC—or the General Assembly create another mechanism—while prosecutors use extraterritorial jurisdiction. They conclude clerical rule itself drives the repression and that only its overthrow and a democratic republic would end the cycle.

Four years after Iran’s 2022 nationwide uprising, the regime is still trying to evade accountability for its brutal crimes against humanity. Security forces killed hundreds of protesters, injured thousands, and arrested tens of thousands to suppress demonstrations that spread across the country following the death in custody of Mahsa Zhina Amini.

A new investigation by Amnesty International now provides one of the most detailed reconstructions yet of how that crackdown was organized. Published on September 16, 2026, the more than 1,000-page Architects of Atrocities report examines not only what security forces did on the streets, but also the institutions, officials, orders, and command structures behind the repression.
