Russia Rejoining Group of Seven (G7) Sparks Debates – OpEd
Russia is transiting through very turbulent times and yet has an unwavering desire to forge better relations, particularly in the area of economic cooperation, with the United States. Russia has no intentions to fight Europe despite the deterioration of relations over critical developments with Ukraine. But, for these several months, U.S. President Donald Trump is on the move to find peace strategies for Ukraine, and thus consistently convincing Russia to rejoin the G7 group. Washington thinks it would be much better court Russia back to tackle security and work for strategic stability.
Notwithstanding this current situation, Russia and Ukraine were both Soviet republics, and consequently share historical features such as Russian language and culture, religion, and even territorial issues – these are very important key elements, and many others in common, until the Socialist system unexpectedly collapsed in August 1991.
On the whole, we are witnessing an emerging world order, Russia like any other country, passing through all kinds of evolutionary processes, and worse, experiencing economic recessions, and finally struggling for socio-economic and political sustainability.
There is also an indelible fact when Putin gives a distinctive definition about members of G7, asked rhetorically why those countries that form the G7, call themselves the “Big Seven” in the world? What’s so big about them? In terms of purchasing power parity, India’s economy is the third largest in the world. And where are the countries like the United Kingdom in terms of purchasing power parity? What is their ranking now, tenth or thereabouts?
Putin cautiously referred to the deeply flawed economic policies pursued by the leadership of many of those countries. A recession in Germany is evident, for the third year in a row; France is in a difficult situation,........
