A Memorable Evening At 40th International Ankara Music Festival – OpEd
Tbilisi Symphony Orchestra & Georgian State Choir perform “Requiem”
As part of the International Ankara Music Festival, the concert held on April 6, 2026 at CSO Ada Ankara (Ziraat Bank Main Hall) offered the audience a powerful and distinctive musical experience with Requiemby Vakhtang Kakhidze. The Tbilisi Symphony Orchestra and the Georgian State Choir performed under the baton of the composer himself, with chorus preparation by Archil Ushveridze.
Structured in 15 movements, the work preserves the traditional requiem form while successfully incorporating the rich textures of Georgian polyphonic singing. Movements such as Kyrie, Dies irae, Lacrimosa, and Agnus Dei stood out with their depth and vocal color, creating a compelling and immersive atmosphere. The synthesis of tradition and contemporary expression gave the piece a distinctive artistic identity.
Vakhtang Kakhidze’s interpretation presented the work with a clear sense of continuity and cohesion, while the interaction between orchestra and choir conveyed a strong sense of unity on stage. Dynamic contrasts and expressive intensity enhanced the overall dramatic impact of the performance.
The soloists also made a valuable contribution to the evening. Child soloist Dachi Ghlonti, together with the female quartet and male sextet, demonstrated technical precision and expressive clarity, enriching the emotional landscape of the work. Their vocal balance and discipline were among the highlights of the performance.
Beyond being a concert, the evening served as a meaningful cultural encounter, bringing the depth and uniqueness of Georgian polyphonic tradition directly to Ankara audiences. The meeting of different musical cultures on one stage once again reflected the festival’s international and inclusive vision.
Organized since 1985 by the Sevda-Cenap And Music Foundation, the International Ankara Music Festivalremains one of Türkiye’s most established and respected classical music events. Taking place between April 4–30, 2026, this year’s edition continues to stand out with its diverse repertoire and international participation.
It is important to acknowledge and thank the Tbilisi Symphony Orchestra, the Georgian State Choir, and all participating artists for their valuable contribution to the festival and for sharing this remarkable musical experience with the Ankara audience. Their presence exemplified the unifying power of music and left a lasting impression on the festival’s legacy.
