OPINION | MIKE MASTERSON: Innocent freed

It keeps happening. Innocent people convicted and imprisoned on bogus evidence, in many instances through corrupt behavior by authorities, are freed from prison when truth finally rises again.

And as promised, whenever I find instances, I will emphasize them to keep valued readers aware.

This shameful saga involves 47-year-old LaVone Hill who walked free from behind the walls of a Muskegon, Mich., prison last month, 22 years after he was convicted for a double murder he didn't commit.

His case, involving police and prosecutorial misconduct, was called the most egregious they've handled by his lawyers with the University of Michigan's Innocence Clinic.

That's saying something considering Hill was the 44th wrongfully convicted person that clinic has helped free from prison. Imagine that many innocent people whose lives were forever ruined and the terrible ripple effects throughout their families. Sad to contemplate.

In this matter, reports said Hill was convicted of killing two people after a Detroit dice game in 2001. Michigan Public Radio reported, "His conviction was based on the testimony of one man, who recanted it in court. But Detroit Police Sgt. Walter Bates had coerced that man's testimony, and he testified against Hill, who was found guilty and sentenced to life in........
