TOWHEY: New Afghan memorial should celebrate successes there

The federal government wants to know what its new Afghanistan War memorial in Ottawa should look like. They’re asking for our input through an online survey.

Should it be a small, intimate space for personal reflection? Or, a large public gathering space?

Another option proposed in the survey: a place where visitors learn what Canada did in Afghanistan for 14 years.

That’s the winner in my books.

There’s already a memorial to Canadians who died in Afghanistan hidden away at the new National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa’s suburbs. This new monument will be easier to find – across the street from the Canadian War Museum.

Naturally, it should honour the 158 Canadian soldiers, one diplomat, a journalist and two civilian contractors killed in the war. But, it should also recognize the living – 40,000 Canadian soldiers fought in our longest war. And, it should relate the toll paid by families who supported our troops.

Visitors should also learn about thousands of Canadian civilians who worked in Afghanistan, supporting our troops or working to rebuild the........
