The problem with being a fiscal conservative who supports a national, revenue-neutral, carbon tax — returning every dollar to Canadians as income tax cuts, verified by the auditor general — is that it’s like taking a knife to a gun fight.

It means when Conservative politicians like Ontario Premier Doug Ford says a carbon tax will cause a recession, or federal Conservative leader Andrew Scheer says he can achieve Canada’s Paris climate targets without a carbon tax (a position he has now backed away from), I have to explain why they’re wrong.

For this, aside from many of my readers asking me if I’ve lost my mind, I get the occasional pat on the head from “progressive” NGO types who offer that while some of my ideas are flawed, it’s admirable that a conservative supports a carbon tax.
