GUNTER: A significant victory for free speech

All too often in the past decade or so, universities have become shelters for faculty and students who don’t want to be confronted by ideas that disturb them.

Typically, these are left-wing, “progressive” professors and students who don’t want to hear other ideas on abortion, climate change, LGBTQ rights, Indigenous reconciliation, Israel and other fashionable social causes.

They are free to accuse anyone they disagree with of racism, sexism, homophobia, colonialism or paternalism but they retreat instantly to “safe spaces” and ban “trigger words” and “microaggressions” every time someone offers up a thought these social-justice warriors do not consider ultra “woke.”

On Monday, at the Alberta Court of Appeal, the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms and a University of Alberta anti-abortion group, won a significant victory against this monolith of thought conformity at institutions of higher learning.
