HASSAN: Pope Francis deflects from child abuse issue

Pope Francis has created quite a stir in the media over his recent statements on gay priests and nuns. In his soon to be published book, The Strength of Vocation, the Pope reportedly makes statements imploring gay priests to leave the Church if they can’t remain celibate.

Some may suggest that dwelling on homosexuality is a smokescreen to cover a more sinister issue for which the Church is responsible: the abuse of young and vulnerable children.

Given the Vatican’s long-established policy on celibacy, it’s puzzling that the Pope is targeting gay priests. Why not all priests who cannot remain celibate, whether homosexual or heterosexual?

Such a bias makes it clear that the Church views homosexuality as sinful, although it has hedged its bets by insisting that gay people themselves are........
