HASSAN: Abdul Sattar Edhi - a man worth honouring

5 0 0

What’s in a name? they say. And certainly on some issues names do not matter. But Pakistanis would be well advised to name the brand new airport in Islamabad, one that I had occasion to visit three times in 2018, after their greatest philanthropist of all time, Abdul Sattar Edhi.

It is a modern airport, equipped with all the facilities that 21st century travelers demand. It has provisions for all-weather takeoff and landing. It will provide service to 15 million passengers annually and even accommodate the Airbus 380. But of course that’s no reason why Pakistan should name it after Edhi.

This man helped the poverty-stricken masses like no one else. He ran free ambulances and provided food and shelter for the homeless, all from a simple and unconditional effort to help those in need.

Thus far nothing major in Pakistan bears his name, even though........
