Donald Trump said again on Tuesday that he doesn’t want Canada building cars. As Mark Carney lands in Beijing, he should know that Xi Jinping feels the same way.
Xi’s plan to flood the market with Chinese vehicles isn’t just about challenging Canada’s struggling electric-vehicle sector, it’s about total automotive market domination.
That’s what China is headed towards in Europe where they started 2025 with less than 3% market share for new sales and ended with more than 10%. It’s what is happening in Brazil where Chinese vehicles are overtaking European and Japanese brands for new car sales.
China doesn’t just want market access; they want market domination. They want to put our auto market out of business.
The question is, will we let them?
Trump is blunt in saying that he wants to move auto production from Canada to the United States. He made comments about that again on Tuesday while also saying he’s indifferent about renewing CUSMA.
“I want to build the cars here, not in Canada. We used to build cars in Canada. Now the Canada cars … the Canadians are moving here to build cars,” Trump said.
