Keith Gerein: Getting unstuck from our winter ruts requires Edmonton — and Edmontonians — to do better

You know Edmonton’s roads are in bad shape when even the snow removal vehicles are getting stuck.

This would be hilarious if it wasn’t also incredibly frustrating, but at the very least it should engender some sympathy for the difficult job those crews have and just how much snow fell on our city in a short time.

Unfortunately, the arrival of 2026 has seen sympathy in short supply. Instead, some Edmontonians seem to have hit peak anger and irrationality, with reports that residents are harassing and threatening workers and even throwing shovels at their vehicles.

Moreover, far too many Edmontonians are not adhering to the parking ban that enables these workers to do the job we are desperate for them to do.

I get that everything seems frightening and exhausting in the world right now, winter has been awful and there is considerable ire at the state of the roads. But the way to handle that is not to make it more difficult for crews to get those roads cleared.

Anger is better directed as complaints to city hall and city council, which sets the policy and the budget under........
