Fireworks at May elections meeting as councillors called 'idiots'

All the tension of the last two years of Suffolk's local politics culminated in a fiery meeting at Suffolk County Council on Monday morning.

Following a lively protest outside, councillors sat down in Endeavour House's chamber for an extraordinary meeting to discuss the government's letter asking the council for its position on postponing elections again.

The Conservative administration's leader, Matthew Hicks, said the decision is down to the government but noted that he believed a postponement would free up capacity for devolution.

However, with fierce opposition and "democracy" at the heart of every speech, shots were fired in all directions over the potential for a third election postponement in 13 months.

At the height of the tension, Reform UK's leader at the council, Christopher Hudson, called Conservative councillors "stooges" and "useful idiots" for their position.
