The team from RAF Mildenhall were part of 130 US Air Force and Army personnel from across the UK to assist in the recovery of Lt. Lester Lowry.

Lowry was just out of flight school, and assigned to the 487th Fighter Squadron in Norfolk, when he took off from RAF Bodney on January 26, 1944 in his Thunderbolt.
