The murder the city forgot... killer still on the run as police stay silent

On one of the hottest days of the summer, as pubs and bars started to fill up for the start of a balmy August weekend, the killer struck.

He thrust a blade once into the chest of Oliver Payne following a confrontation near the entrance to an underpass beneath Grapes Hill.

Despite the efforts of paramedics, Mr Payne, 38, died on the pavement of Paragon Place, West Pottergate, near the communal bins and overlooked by dozens of flats.

And that is just about all we know.

Almost six months on from the killing - which happened in the early evening of Friday, August 2 - the hunt for the murderer seems to have stalled.

The police remain tight-lipped, with little interest in sharing information about their investigation with the public or in trying to recruit their assistance in solving this brutal case.

They have stressed this is an isolated case. One of the only things we know about the killing is that the culprit and victim are thought to have known each other.

Mr Payne was homeless and not working at the time his death. Officers have intimated that whatever led to the violence had its roots in the city's illegal drugs scene.

Yet they do not seem to have got much further than that and the killer has led them on a merry dance ever since.
