North Norfolk District Council officials have said it will not be able to begin offering the service until early 2027 due to issues receiving vehicles to collect the waste.

Great Yarmouth Borough Council has already admitted it will be unable to meet the government-set deadline of April 2026.

At a recent council meeting, Callum Ringer, NNDC cabinet member for waste, said: "In March last year, this council voted to proceed with allocating funds for a fleet of vehicles to enable a roll out of domestic food waste collections, a service that will soon become a statutory responsibility for all local councils.

"Throughout this process, we've engaged constructively with the Department for Environment and Rural Affairs about the challenges we anticipated.

"One of the risks we identified early on was a rush to market, with many authorities across the country placing fleet orders simultaneously.

"Our original time frame would have seen us take delivery of vehicles in late summer with a view to rolling out of service in the autumn.

"Unfortunately, but somewhat predictably, we have now been informed of delays to that delivery.

"We're not alone in that and a number of our neighbouring authorities are facing similar delays."

Great Yarmouth Borough Council has also said it will not be able to provide food waste collections by April.

Manufacturers for the new vehicles have told the authority it could be late 2027 by the time it receives a fleet of food waste trucks.

South Norfolk Council and Breckland Council, the two other Norfolk authorities set to introduce the food waste collections, have not said when they will begin the service yet.

The remaining district councils already provide such collections.
