And the meeting to decide the fate of Sheringham's bus shelter even started with an appeal for civility by the town's mayor.
Alas, it seems one councillor must have missed the message.
Jeremy Stubbs responded to the final vote to save the shelter with an audible expletive.
The councillor - who was in favour of demolishing the structure and installing a modern replacement - said out loud "f**king idiots" as it emerged he had been outvoted.
The following day, he resigned from the council admitting he his language was "extremely inappropriate".
