Works on new vets practice under way at busy shopping centre

A new veterinary practice is being built at the Carlton Colville Shopping Centre in Lowestoft.

Work has begun on the new vets clinic which will be situated at an "underutilised parking area" on the Ashburnham Way site.

Plans for the new vets were given the green light despite concerns over parking and the impact on the doctors' surgery nearby.

An application lodged by agents Alder King Planning Consultants for the applicant Rookman Properties Ltd was permitted by East Suffolk Council under delegated powers in July last year.

Documents said the demand for veterinary care "has risen sharply" since the pandemic and there are currently "limited local options".

Now, construction is under way on a single-storey building that will feature a veterinary service.

With the groundworks having started, East Suffolk Council said that contractor Countrystyle will be removing the glass bottle banks at Ashburnham Way in Carlton Colville this week "due to the development works taking place."

A bottle bank will be moved to the back of the community centre at a later time, with the nearest glass recycling bank available by searching online.

In a message to its patients via its Facebook page this week, staff at the Rosedale Surgery - the GP doctors surgery - said: "We’d like to let everyone know that construction work is currently taking place in the car park.

"As a result, half of the car park is temporarily closed to allow site work to be carried out safely.

"There are multiple construction vehicles moving in and out of the area, so please take extra care when using the car park.

"We appreciate your patience and co-operation while these works are under way.

"Thank you for helping us keep everyone safe!"
