Future of vital service secured after charity's sudden collapse

After Access Community Trust ceased trading last month, with 96 staff losing their jobs on payday, numerous services have been badly affected.

For almost 40 years SOLD (Special Objectives for the Local Disabled) has provided a workshop environment for people with physical and sensory disabilities in Lowestoft.

But after the trust dramatically folded on February 25, the SOLD studio at Harvest Drive on the South Lowestoft Industrial Estate was closed.

It prompted emergency measures to be put into place as part of a multi-agency response led by East Suffolk Council.

There was some welcome salvation for SOLD members this week as Involve Active - a not-for-profit organisation based in Lowestoft - stepped in to ensure those affected are not left without support.

With a mission focused on improving wellbeing, inclusion and opportunities for people of all abilities through meaningful activities, Involve Active has been delivering inclusive programmes for individuals with SEND and additional needs for more than 14 years.

The organisation is working with Mat Parker to launch a new programme at Involve Active that will continue delivering the same woodwork and craft sessions previously offered through SOLD.

Mr Parker had previously led the SOLD sessions, and to ensure continuity for those who relied on the service, he will continue to lead the sessions and help to minimise disruption for individuals and families following the unexpected closure.

Involve Active operations manager, Jennie Archibald, said: “The closure of Access Community Trust has had a profound impact on many individuals and families who rely on these important services.

"When we realised how many people would suddenly be left without support, we knew we had to act quickly.

"We are delighted to be working with Mat Parker to continue these woodwork and craft sessions.

"Keeping Mat involved means participants will still have the trusted support they know.”

The new programme will provide a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment where people with SEND and additional needs can continue to build practical skills, develop confidence and enjoy meaningful social interaction.

Involve Active is currently contacting former SOLD participants and families for the new programme.
