Care home branded 'unsafe' after residents found with 'unexplained bruising'

Iceni House in Swaffham was plunged into special measures after receiving the worst possible rating following two visits by inspectors.

A report revealed residents were often “dirty” and “unkempt” while others had “unexplained bruising”.

Representatives from health watchdog the Care Quality Commission (CQC) also found that a fire door was “bolted shut” and ruled the setting “unhygienic” and "unclean".

Two unannounced visits in October and November 2025 also revealed care plans in the “grubby” home to be “inconsistent” and “dangerous” - putting the 60 people living there “at risk”.

Managers, who were accused of heading a “closed culture” had also failed to act following a fire risk assessment which had demanded urgent improvements be made in October 2024.
