Ousted Labour leader claims his party had been doing 'really, really popular' things

Mike Stonnard, who had led City Hall since 2023, insisted the council is in "excellent shape" as the Green Party prepares to take control of it.

He was speaking out after his party's dismal showing at the city and county elections last week.

It's sole success was a county seat in Hethersett which it won by three votes.

Labour was hit hardest in Norwich, where the Greens seized five wards to take a majority at City Hall.

Despite the scale of the losses, Mr Stonnard pointed to national trends rather than any shortcomings under his administration.

"People have lived with the consequences of 14 years of Tory austerity. Their lives are still improving but people are still finding it tough," he said. 

"What I heard on the doorstep was about the the £40m we committed for deprived areas,........
