'It's a real privilege' - Norfolk couple designing garden at famous flower show

Joe and Laura Carey, who are behind the Carey Garden Design Studio based in Holt, are designing a garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in May.

Their work has been featured in several gardening magazines and journals, such as Country & Town House Magazine, as well as on television.

Just last year, the pair scooped a gold medal at the show for their Norfolk-inspired garden, all about slowing down.

The couple has decided to return to the event this year, with a space that celebrates London’s garden gems.

"It's a real privilege to be there, full stop," Mr Carey said. "We really enjoy the process and it's thrilling to work at the top end of the industry."

Their design will feature plants that thrive even in the most challenging urban conditions, surrounded by boundary walls made from a new biomaterial called Oyster.

Copper ribbons will also run throughout the garden and its hidden rivers within.

From above, the footprint of the garden is inspired by an oyster shell shape, referencing London’s oyster trade.

"We also wanted to pay homage to London’s historic oyster trade, connecting it to the city’s past and even to modern elements like the Oyster Card," Mr Carey added.

"We’ve treated them as adornments for the garden, much like jewels in a crown, and we’ve been careful to source them responsibly.”

The duo will also be exhibiting a garden at the RHS Sandringham Flower Show this July.
