For the first time, NHS England has published monthly figures on spending related to so-called "bed-blockers".

These are hospital inpatients who have been deemed by a doctor as being well enough to not require ward treatment, but who are unable to go home without a form of step-down care.

When this happens, patients continue to occupy hospital beds until packages of care can be put in place in the community - either at home or a different care setting.
