Man, 90, packs up 35 years of his life as Norfolk clifftop homes face collapse

George Mayes was among the distraught residents forced to evacuate their homes along the village’s crumbling coastline ahead of Storm Goretti on Thursday, January 8.

Fourteen houses on The Marrams and Fakes Road were left perilously close to the cliff edge after around 10 metres of land were lost since Friday, January 2.

This comes after nine houses built on the fragile dunes were already demolished in the past three weeks.

Concerns that further cliff falls could occur during forecast strong winds and heavy rain associated with Storm Goretti prompted Great Yarmouth Borough Council to write to residents, instructing them to leave their homes on Thursday night and over the weekend.

Among those forced to move out on Thursday morning was Mr Mayes, who had lived on Fakes Road for 35 years.

The 90-year-old learned on Wednesday that he would have to leave his home – and that it will be demolished next........
